Many thanks to Megan Beatie for sending me an ARC! I was so, SO, SO excited for the final book in the Penryn and the End of Days trilogy, End of Days, by Susan EE. I’ve been with this series since day 1, when an ARC for Angelfall showed up on my doorstep. I was hooked from the beginning, and have eagerly awaited each ARC since then. That being said, this final book did not disappoint in any way. It was thrilling, explosive, emotional, and had so many twists and turns that it was impossible to put down. Don’t want to give any spoilers, but I can guarantee that anyone who loves this series is in for a serious treat.
Penryn has always been one of my favorite characters in paranormal YA literature, because she is so kickass, and she did not disappoint in this book. She doesn’t rely on the love interest, Raffe, to always save her. Instead, she picks herself up, dusts herself off, and does whatever needs to be done. She and Raffe make a spectacular team, but it is made clear in this book that Penryn on her own can kick some serious angel ass. Raffe was the brooding angel he always has been, but it becomes apparent he is torn about his feelings for Penryn. The chemistry between them is explosive and undeniable, but due to the whole world ending thing, their love takes a back seat to saving the world.
That’s actually one of the things I love best about this series. It’s a paranormal romance, but the focus is not solely on the romance. Susan Ee has created an incredibly dark, gritty, and gruesome apocalyptic world, and this aesthetic is pushed to it’s limits in End of Days. I cringed at several moments, but the horror is also part of the appeal. She has created a very realistic apocalyptic world. This isn’t a situation with a damsel in distress, a fallen angel sent to save her, and a small fight between the humans and angels that results in everything being perfectly fine. Loyalties are tested, unlikely allegiances formed, gruesome scientific experiments, manipulative supernatural creatures, and complete and utter chaos at times. It’s a beautifully written mess of horror and determination. Penryn and Raffe are both survivors, despite the multitudes of challenges being thrown their way.
This conclusion to an amazing series was not a letdown. There was a kickass heroine, swoon-worthy love interest, spectacular fight scenes, sizzling chemistry, and an incredibly detailed world was brought to life by Susan Ee’s writing. This thrilling conclusion to a beautiful series will be released May 12, 2015, so mark your calendars! You definitely don’t want to miss this. Also, Goodreads is also holding a giveaway that ends May 12; you can enter to win a copy of End of Days!
